Subject: CTAN-Ann at SHSU.edu (TeX-related Announcements List)

Over the past week or so, one of the "normal" periodic topics has arisen
again on comp.text.tex to split it into a subset of groups. I am in no way
meaning to forestall any of the discussion because it appears that for the
first time I can recall, or find in the archives, a logical-to-context
split is being discussed, focusing on subgroups for announcements, bugs,
etc. (i.e., comp.text.tex, comp.text.tex.announce, comp.text.tex.bugs,
comp.text.tex.help,\ldots) instead of the tired old division by package
(i.e., comp.text.tex, comp.text.tex.latex, comp.text.tex.plain,\ldots).
Personally, one of the very nice features about comp.text.tex in its
present configuration is that everything is all in one location, meaning
you can elect to read or not read a post, without having to leave one group
to go to another to find what it is you want (nor see the same post
splattered all over a hierarchy of newsgroups via cross-posting). But I
digress.

The purpose of this post is to announce the existence of a list I created
some time back and have yet to inform anyone about. The list is:
                           <CTAN-Ann at SHSU.edu>
This list is intended to provide a consistent communications tool in
disseminating announcements to and from the coordinators of the
Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN) and other interested parties
regarding product and utility announcements related to TeX -- things which
ought to be included on the CTAN. It is fully archived, completely public
for subscription purposes, and is open to posts from anyone. It will not,
at least initially, be moderated. The overriding concern of this list is
to ensure an efficient, identifiable, and authoritative single source of
information about the evolution of the CTAN collection to it worldwide base
of users. Specifically, this is NOT a discussion list.

Since it is specifically CTAN-related, action to include or modify CTAN
holdings based on posts appearing there should be forthcoming as quickly as
possible. Thus, it should be viewed as the preferred address in announcing
TeX-related software insofar as getting it properly included in the CTAN
for others to access.

This list is not presently gatewayed to any existing Usenet newsgroup and
will not be gatewayed to comp.text.tex. However, should a
comp.text.tex.announce (or similar announcement-oriented newsgroup) be
created at some time in the future, this would provide an ideal mail<->news
fit. Indeed, it may serve as a catalyst for such a hierarchical split,
much the way LitProg preceded comp.programming.literate.

As with all lists maintained at Sam Houston State University, the archives
of the list are publicly available via anonymous ftp and Gopher and the
archives will be index-searchable for future reference purposes.

If you would like to subscribe to CTAN-Ann, include the text:

this list or any of the services we offer, please contact me at your
convenience.

Regards, George
