Zdravím,

je to sice off-topic, ale tento předpoklad na některých systémech nemusí
platit ;-) Ve zdrojových textech GNU Emacs je např. tato sekvence:

  /* Supposedly happens on VMS.  */
  if (! not_regular && st.st_size < 0)
    error ("File size is negative");

Ale jinak asi máte pravdu.
